How Often Should You Service Your Pool in Gauteng?

One of the questions we hear most often from homeowners is simply: how often does my pool actually need to be serviced? The honest answer is that it depends on the season, how much the pool is used, and what is around it, but there are some sensible rules of thumb for Gauteng conditions.

Summer: weekly is ideal

Through the hot Highveld summer, pools work hard. Higher temperatures, more swimmers, afternoon thunderstorms, and pollen or garden debris all throw the water chemistry out of balance quickly. A weekly service, testing and balancing the water, cleaning the pool, emptying baskets, and backwashing the filter, keeps everything stable and the water safe to swim in.

Winter: every two to four weeks

In the cooler months the pool is used less and algae grows more slowly, so you can usually stretch to a fortnightly or monthly service. It is tempting to stop altogether, but a pool left completely unattended over winter is exactly the pool that turns green and needs an expensive recovery in spring.

What a proper service includes

  • Testing and balancing chlorine, pH, and alkalinity
  • Skimming, brushing, and vacuuming
  • Emptying weir and pump baskets
  • Backwashing and rinsing the filter
  • Checking the pump, filter, and cleaner are working properly

Why regular servicing saves money

Small problems are cheap to fix; neglected ones are not. A worn seal, a struggling pump, or slightly-off water chemistry all become bigger, costlier jobs when left. Regular servicing is really about catching those early, which is why a maintenance plan almost always works out cheaper than the occasional emergency call-out.
